American Herro is an inspirational story about a woman’s journey from a refugee fleeing terror in Iraq to America where she overcomes her frightening first years to eventually achieve the American dream. This feature-length documentary follows a young Muslim-Kurdish woman, Herro Mustafa, on a truly American quest.

"American Herro is a pivotal story weaving the sadness and disorder created by Saddam Hussein's Baathist regime and the on-going genocide of the Kurdish people with a story of hope and freedom for a young Kurdish girl growing up in America. At the age of three, Herro Mustafa, from Arbil, Iraq and her family found refuge in Minot, North Dakota. With Kurdish roots and American fostering, Herro represents a truly amazing, but often overlooked aspect of American culture: assimilation and freedom.

Herro's father, Abdul, being an outspoken leader of the youth movement in Iraq in the early 70's was forced to flee from his home, like many other Kurds. Embracing their new home in America, and learning to "never forget" became an instrumental reason for Herro's desire to return again to the country where she was born.

While the Mustafa's retell their story, they experience a transition into bigger questions about the future: how to keep alive the traditions of the Kurdish people and maintain their family unity, living the American dream, while working for peace in Iraq."
